For South Africans in Australia, and the ones on their way

We made the move. These are the people who helped.

When we arrived, every useful answer came from someone who had already sorted the same thing: which courier gets fingerprints to SAPS, which bank opens an account before you land, which migration agent actually replies. Aussiekaners keeps those people in one place. Ask about work, police clearance, money, schools or a visa, and we give you the name we used.

I'm the person who reads every question that comes through the form, and you will usually hear back within a day.

This website is independent of the Facebook groups that use the Aussiekaners name. It is not run by them and does not speak for them. If you want the groups, they are on Facebook. This is a referral desk.

What we help with

Every move is twenty small problems. We know a person for each one.

We do not do the work ourselves. We send you to someone who did it properly for another South African, we say what they charge or that it is free, and we say when a registered migration agent has to take over.

Visas and sponsorship

Visitor, employer-sponsored, skilled and partner visas. Nobody on this site answers a visa question. Yours goes to a registered migration agent, and you get their name and MARN with the introduction. Aussiekaners is a private website, not a government agency. Immigration laws change; ask the agent about your own circumstances, not a forum.

Referred to: a registered migration agent · name and MARN given with the introduction

Jobs and trades

Motor mechanics, diesel and heavy-vehicle techs, electricians, carpenters, truck drivers. Aussie Jobs checks your trade certificate, tells you which occupation it maps to and whether a skills assessment is needed, and puts you in front of a workshop that is hiring. The employer pays their fee, not you.

Referred to: Aussie Jobs · free to the candidate

Travel and flights

The one-way flight with the extra bags, the first trip home, your parents' first visit. We booked ours through a partner we have used ourselves, and they knew which fares allow the baggage. We tell you what they charge before you call.

Police clearance

The SAPS police clearance certificate, done from Australia. Fingerprints taken here on the SAPS form, posted to the Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria, then the wait. We know a service that runs the courier and chases it. Allow time for the wait and start it before anyone asks you for it.

Money and banking

Moving rands out and what SARS wants to see first, opening an Australian bank account before you land, getting a tax file number from the ATO in your first week, and what super is and why your employer pays it. Our transfer partner moved ours; we tell you their rate and what we earn if you use them.

Settling in

Rentals without a rental history, school zoning and what the school asks for before it enrols, converting your South African licence (each state does it differently), Medicare enrolment, a White Card if you are going on site, an RSA if you are pouring drinks, and where to buy boerewors. Answered by people who did it in your city.

How it works

Ask the question. We send you a name and a number.

  1. Join the hub

Free. Say where you are, South Africa or Australia, and what you are trying to get done.

  2. Ask your question

One form, written the way you would say it out loud. Visa, job, clearance, money, school. There is no points test and no quiz, because we are not the ones who decide any of that.

  3. Get a name

We send you a person or a service that did it for another Saffa, with what they charge or the word free. A visa question goes to a registered migration agent, and we tell you who they are.

  4. Pass it on

Once you are settled you are the one with the number. Join as a helper and take the next question from your city.

Jobs in Australia

Mechanics and trades: Aussie Jobs finds the workshop and a registered agent handles the visa.

Australian dealerships, fleets and independent workshops sponsor qualified technicians on the Skills in Demand (subclass 482) visa. Aussie Jobs checks your trade certificate and years on the tools, tells you which occupation your trade maps to and whether a skills assessment is needed, puts you in front of a workshop that is hiring now, and hands the visa application to a registered migration agent. The Department of Home Affairs makes the visa decision; nobody else can.

You are not charged for the placement; the employer pays the recruitment fee. Aussie Jobs also sells a paid job-ready guide for each trade. It is optional and it says so before you pay.

Join the hub

Tell us what you are stuck on.

Free to join. A person reads the form and replies within a day, usually with a name and a number, sometimes with "that will not work, and here is why".

Already in Australia and willing to take a question from someone coming over? Join as a helper and say what you have done: a rental in Perth, a school in Logan, the clearance from Adelaide.

We do not sell your details. We pass your name and email to the one person or service we refer you to, and we tell you who that is first. Paid referrals are labelled before the introduction, not after.

Straight answers

Are you the Aussiekaners Facebook group?

No. This website is independent. It is not run by any of the Facebook groups that use the Aussiekaners name, it is not connected to them, and it does not speak for them or their admins. The groups are on Facebook and we are glad they exist. This site is a referral desk run by an Australian company, with one person reading and answering the questions.

Is Aussiekaners a migration agency?

No, and it is not a government agency either. Nobody on this site gives immigration assistance. A visa question goes to a registered migration agent, who works under the Migration Agents Code of Conduct, and the advice comes from them, in writing, with their name and MARN. Immigration laws change; for your own circumstances, ask the agent.

Does it cost anything, and who pays you?

Joining and asking is free, and stays free. The visa referral costs you nothing. Aussie Jobs charges the employer, not you. Some of the other services we refer you to pay us a referral fee when you use them, and we say so before the introduction. Members who answer settling-in questions are not paid, and neither are we.

Can I get a working holiday visa on a South African passport?

Not under the rules as published at the time of writing. South Africa is not on the list for the Working Holiday (subclass 417) or Work and Holiday (subclass 462) visas, and a South African passport cannot use the free eVisitor or the ETA for a short visit either; a visit means a Visitor visa (subclass 600). The routes that do exist are visitor, employer-sponsored, skilled and partner visas. Which of those fits you is a question for the registered migration agent, not for us.

Who runs this?

One person reads and answers the questions, someone who made the move themselves. The site is owned and run by an Australian company. It is independent of the Facebook groups, it is not a migration agency, and it is not a South African employment agency.
